Smithsonian Traveling Exhibit Celebration:
Local Calendar of Events (updated to Oct. 16th)

The McPherson Museum & Arts Foundation has been selected to host the Smithsonian exhibit, New Harmonies: Celebrating American Roots Music from October 3 – November 9, 2008.
The museum will provide a companion exhibit on local music, and there is a hands-on trunk of musical instruments to try. Below is a list of events celebrating music in our community.

Now through 2008
One Community, One Book: Bound for Glory by Woody Guthrie: book clubs are welcome to add this book to their list for 2008; McPherson Public Library included it in their Adult Summer Reading Program. The Bookshelf has the book in stock; a portion of the cost of the book will be donated to the McPherson Museum.

Exhibit at Miller Library, McPherson College: Sweetening the Voice of the Harp: Brethren Hymnody in America.

Stroll or drive around town to view art in expected and unexpected places. Refreshments and live music at some exhibitions.

The Central Christian College Concert Choir, Chorale, Guitar Ensemble, and Piano Ensemble, and ministry teams Lamps of Fire, Wadi Walkers, and Morning Star Revue will perform music and skits from their fall repertoires. After the Fine Arts Spotlight, student songwriters will perform original pieces and cover songs in the College's coffee shop.

McPherson Opera House Company Meeting: Opera House Grand Ballroom
McPherson High School jazz ensemble will warm up the evening, followed by Alfred Cochran, Kansas State University, who will present a discussion on the roots of jazz in America. Musical segments will be included for demonstration purposes.

A hidden gem for musical theatre lovers, Quilters follows a pioneer woman and her daughters in a series of short scenes brought together to present aspects of frontier life and womanhood. Pieced together to represent the quilt of life, the tableaux from the show deal with loss, life, family and, above all, the strangely disappearing trait called ‘perseverance.’
